His narrative essays often bring readers beside him at the lab bench, inside a clinic, out to a field site, or back into folklore. Blending scientific insight with literary narrative, he reveals how discoveries are made while acknowledging their limitations, asking what we should expect of them, and what they reveal that even scientists might rather ignore.​​​ His essays often venture into the ethical and emotional dimensions of biomedical research, reflecting on how much we don't know, uncertainty and what it means to be human.

His work has appeared in December, Aeon, and Vox Magazines. His essay “NQR” received the Curt Johnson Prose Award. Two of his essays were nominated for Pushcart Prizes, and in 2020 he was awarded an Oregon Literary Fellowship. ​
